How to Use

  1. Enter your 7-digit product payload to auto-calculate the 8th check digit, or enter a complete 8-digit GTIN-8.
  2. The tool validates the input and applies the GS1 Modulo-10 check digit algorithm in real-time.
  3. If a check digit mismatch is detected, click 'Fix Check Digit' to adopt the mathematically correct code.
  4. Adjust sizing, height, margins, or colors under Appearance Settings if necessary.
  5. Click 'Download SVG' for vector packaging artwork or 'Download PNG' for digital records.

About This Format

EAN-8 (designated GTIN-8 by GS1) is the compact retail barcode standard defined in ISO/IEC 15420. It was specifically engineered for small packages and containers where a standard 13-digit EAN-13 symbol would take up more than 25% of the printable label space (such as cosmetics, gum packets, and confectionery). It consists of 7 payload digits and a final Modulo-10 check digit.

Validation & Technical Constraints

  • Accepts exactly 7 numeric digits (payload) or 8 numeric digits (payload with check digit).
  • Enforces the official GS1 Modulo-10 check digit calculation.
  • Never silently renders an invalid check digit to avoid point-of-sale scanning rejections.

Frequently Asked Questions

EAN-8 should be used only on small items where a standard EAN-13 barcode cannot physically fit. GS1 allocates GTIN-8 numbers individually upon request for qualifying small-footprint products.

Like EAN-13, EAN-8 uses the GS1 Modulo-10 formula: starting from the rightmost payload digit (digit 7), odd positions from right get weight 3 and even positions get weight 1. The total is subtracted from the next multiple of 10.
