About This Format

UPC-E is an 8-digit zero-suppressed variation of the standard UPC-A barcode, widely used across North American retail for small products like candy, cosmetics, and pens. By omitting sequences of zeroes according to standardized GS1 compression rules, UPC-E achieves roughly half the physical width of a standard UPC-A symbol while maintaining reliable optical readability.

Validation & Technical Constraints

  • Accepts exactly 8 numeric digits: leading system number (typically 0 or 1), 6 compressed data digits, and a final check digit.
  • Non-numeric characters and incorrect lengths are rejected by the encoder.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Only UPC-A codes with specific patterns of multiple zeroes in the manufacturer or product code can be compressed into UPC-E. Standard products without compressible zeroes must use full UPC-A.

The 8th digit is the original UPC-A Modulo-10 check digit. When a barcode scanner reads the 8-digit UPC-E symbol, it decompresses the code back to 12 digits and validates the check digit against the reconstructed number.
